La Gravette is a small farm in Yviers, Charente, owned & run by Melody & Martin Berry. At the moment, everyone is still dancing between France and the UK, ahead of a permanent transfer to our new home in the sun. We are counting the weeks until the final relocation is complete. Hopefully by early May 2019, we will be on site permanently.
It’s a hubbub of activity with rescue dogs & rescue cats running around learning to shout woof or meow, in no particular order, with a Charentais accent. Joining them are french born and bred chickens alongside angora goats. We are in consultation with the goats as they are hem & hawing over whether they will agree to share the acreage, with alpaca, soon. In the barn, keeping the resident bat colony company, will be a silkworm farm from early Summer 2019.
The human contingent will continue the business of making fine jewellery and other items in precious metals. Woodworking activities include building our own range of spinning wheels with accessories. Luscious Pen & Pencil collections made with highest quality german mechanisms. Soon we will also offer gorgeous handmade chairs and other furniture. More on that to come later.
On a more relaxed level, traditional lacemaking, and other, largely textile, activities will continue too. This will include spinning yarn from the fleeces from the angora goats, alpaca and Silkworm threads, to felting sculptures & accessories, to while away the dark winter nights, huddled by the log burner. Design comes in many shapes and forms, which leads to original art in coloured pencil, graphite, pen & ink or watercolours too.
Mustn’t forget the foodie focus that Martin enjoys. He has wanted to have a large Potager (french for vegetable patch) for years. Much planting of fruit and vegetables will be happening this Spring. He then plans to pickle and preserve by Autumn. It’s most fortunate that old French properties tend to come with marvellous cellar’s for keeping such stock.
It is impractical for us to offer regular diarised workshops due to the workload of running a busy farm and related business. However, we can offer the occasional group or 1-2-1 teaching on request, and it’s possible that we can come to your group across Europe & UK. In the meantime, you can order individual tutorials or full kits to enjoy. Do contact us if you would like us to talk about the options.
Holiday & Activities
There are plenty of holiday lets around the area, so its easy to come to see our product before you buy by appointment. You will enjoy the marvellous microclimate of the Charente, where we have over 200 days of sunshine per year. With the rolling country views, lakes and rivers, not forgetting the gastronomy. Its all easy access to the whole of the Nouvelle Aquitaine – Poiteau Charentes region with Cognac, Pineau, Oysters, Cheese and Sunflowers in abundance. To help with this we created an initial page of links to get you going
We look forward to sharing our experience with you. In the meantime, do keep up to date with us via the Blog, where we will be providing you with anecdotal catch-ups of what’s going on in the process of being alive.
